One best way to get a close glimpse of Mughal architecture is to plan a tour to Agra in North India. The city situated on the bank of the river Yamuna has been the capital of Mughal Emperors from 1526 to 1658. During the Mughal regime a number of buildings have been constructed which still stands as the major tourist destinations. Most notable monuments like Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri has also been designated as World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO.
Some lovers die with making their love immortal. The statement strongly highlight the fairytale like love story of Shah Jahan and his beloved wife Arjumand Banu(Mumtaz). Their love is still blossoms in the form of Taj Mahal, an architectural masterpiece all over the world. The construction of this marvelous edifice began in 1631 and took 22 years for its completion.
History says that, the principal designer of the Taj was Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, Persian architect and more then 2, 000 people were deployed for the work. The whole structure is supported by a square plinth and consists of a symmetrical building that holds a iwan topped by a large dome and a finial.
A visit to Taj Mahal in Agra is very interesting. Travelers get the chance to enjoy a ride on tonga bullock and camel so as to reach the premises of it. The white marble monuments dazzle with the changing phase of the sun, while a glimpse of Taj Mahal at full-moon night offers the silver line reflection of the moon. The best time to visit Taj Mahal is from October to March.
Constructed during the 2nd half of the 16th century, Fatehpur Sikri is among the most-visited tourist destination in Agra. It was build by Mughal Emperor Akbar and for some 10 years, it was considered as the capital of the Mughal Empire. The monument describes the fusion of Gujarati and Rajsathani style of architecture. One can find the excellent use of jali work, surface ornamentation, carvings and intricate ornate columns, all of which talks about the legacy of pre-independent-period of India.
Major attraction within Fatehpur Sikri are Diwan-I-Aam(the hall of public audience), Diwan-I-Khas (the hall of private audience), Jama Masjid( the grand mosque), Naubat Khana( Drum House), Panch Mahal, the tomb of Sheikh Salim Chisti, Buland Darwaza( Gate of Magnificence) and Raja Birbal House. Sunahara Maken, a residence of Akbar’s Christian wife is also worth a visit.
Other popular attractions in Agra are Agra Fort, Itmud-Ud-Daulah Tomb, Mehtab Bagh, Aalsi Bagh, Shahjahan Garden, Ram Bagh and the Mughal Gardens.
