The Value of Hybrid Cloud Hosting
A hybrid hosting approach combines dedicated physical servers and cloud servers to offer the best of both worlds, with limitless combinations.
What Is A “Cloud Server”?
Traditional physical servers are dedicated computers which run the software installed on them. In this respect, they are similar to your home or office computer. Most physical servers do not use all the space available to them. Often, a company will set up a new dedicated physical server to host each new application that it launches. The desire to keep each application separate could come from business-specific needs or a desire to minimize competition between different applications for the same physical resources. Considering the fact that most physical servers are largely under-utilized, this procedure can be both costly and wasteful.
The idea of “virtualization” grew from the desire to tap all of those unused resources sitting on active physical servers. Virtualization software installed on these servers can allow a company to split a single physical machine into several virtual servers, which can then each run different applications in different server environments, even on different operating systems. All on a single machine. This process allows a company to maximize the efficiency of each physical server.
The increasing popularity of virtualization efforts in a hosted environment led to the emergence of cloud computing, or cloud hosting. There are several types of “clouds”. You might see a Software as a Service (SaaS) application described as a Cloud, or as being in “The Cloud”. There are also Platforms as a Service (PaaS) clouds that allow developers to build their own SaaS applications right on top of existing platforms. This article will explore in greater depth a third option, the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud.
What About PCI Regulations?
The PCI security standard includes requirements for policies and procedures concerning security management, network architecture and software design. The Hybrid hosting approach meets these needs when implemented in a Visa PCI certified data center. According to these regulations, website and database applications must be set up on different servers, and they must be separated by a firewall. This prevents website users from being able to access the sensitive, personal information of other people that is stored in the database.
In a traditional implementation, this would mean multiple physical servers. With a virtualized environment, just one server can be used to meet this restriction, making deployment much more affordable. With hybrid hosting, PCI compliance actually becomes more affordable for all businesses.
Private Clouds
There are two types of IaaS clouds: public and private. A “private cloud” is a virtualized infrastructure stretching over many servers, but dedicated to a single client. Private clouds can be hosted internally by a company within their own data center, or off-site at a service provider that maintains the infrastructure of the cloud just for that company.
Public Clouds
With a “public cloud”, all of the hardware servers are typically owned by the hosting company. The virtual computing cloud stretches over this network, and customers can tap into this as an “extra reserve” for additional server capacity when they need it. If your business is one that sees increased traffic seasonally or in time with special promotions or events, this scalability can be critically important. It’s there when you need it in a “pay-as-you-go” style to give you the support you need to meet varying levels of demand.
Hybrid Hosting
Hybrid hosting is a combination of dedicated hosting and cloud servers. This combination gives you the reliability and permanence of a physical hosting solution while also providing the flexibility to scale computing capacity to meet your changing needs. As your business grows, so can your capacity in a virtual environment, without incurring the costs of purchasing additional dedicated servers. The result can save you money and offer you peace of mind with a configuration you’ll never outgrow.
With Hybrid hosting, you have the flexibility to combine the advantages of dedicated hardware and virtual cloud processing, mixing and matching the technologies in the combination that’s best for you. It’s the perfect marriage of physical servers and the virtual environments of public and private clouds.
Is Hybrid Cloud Hosting Right For My eCommerce Needs?
Typically, eCommerce applications have busy periods, either seasonally or during special promotions, when a little extra capacity is needed. Hybrid Cloud Hosting allows you to borrow extra processing capacity from the Cloud only when you need it. If you get really busy, the Cloud is there to help you through it. When the rush is over, you can easily return to your original configuration. It’s that simple.

Ultimately, you want your new customer to have a long and happy life on your SaaS, and trust is a key component of long-term relationships. Don’t sabotage that with a poor SLA.
