The cupola has an incomparable history with respect to other architectural features. It is a unique distinctive structural component of dominant architecture. The history of cupola is like tower which has a long list of purposes in its pocket. It represents an iconic Islamic form of architectural history, which has its origins in early 8th century. Originally, the cupola gave the imposing appearance of the minarets. It’s a logical development that their cupolas would become more artistic, particularly in the advanced state of the Islamic civilization. The cupola became the inspiration for the dome, the great icon of architecture and Islam alike.
Many cultures have used architecture as a status symbol in order to portray the high regard for their values, and the cupolas proved to be that keystone which full filled most the purpose of this stratification. The West very eagerly accepted the challenge, and the Christian churches produced their own angular cupolas at a very rapid pace. By the golden period of evolution which is referred as the Renaissance, the major cities of Europe and the Islamic world were filled up to brim with magnificent buildings which dazzled the modern age.
Arguably, one of the greatest favors ever done to architecture is the cupola. It had forced the development that really wasn’t a requirement for the time. Nothing like it had needed to be done before. It introduced the requirement of understanding of large scale suspended structures in a complex connection with other structures. Architecture received a very Nobel gift from the cupola when private home owners started to demand it. The cupola turned residential architecture into a truly complex artistic medium. The technology involved in cupolas was quite advanced, and still is. As it has developed, it’s brought its own engineering and some much improved concepts of how and why to do effective supports. Structurally, a cupola can’t just be tacked on. It has to be well integrated into its building. Load stresses for big cupolas are not trivial things, and movement of a big heavy cupola isn’t funny as far as a building’s frame is concerned.
The cupola brought architectural innovation to a whole new level. Foundations were redesigned as they needed to handle more load then before. The whole art of building was redeveloped from a starch. It’s probably not an overstatement to say that the entire process of creating the giant buildings of the modern era was heavily influenced by the cupola. Every single load and structural factor in a cupola exists in any big building. The cupola remains a statement of achievement in architecture. Even the big buildings tend to reflect the historic fascination with cupolas. The top levels of almost any large modern building tend to differ from the lower. The Empire State Building was a result of an architectural competition between very talented people, but its form is that of a cupola on top. The Capitol in Washington was a major architectural headache at the time of its construction during the Civil War, but nobody ever questioned its design. Interestingly, nobody has ever yet asked what a cupola is doing on a building.
